Our Story

Making the world a better place by making it more musical.

Music Together® began in 1987 as an educational project of the Center for Music and Young Children. Ken Guilmartin--a composer, preschool music teacher, and one-man research and development team--set out with the goal of creating a parent-child music and movement experience in which children learn through playful, developmentally appropriate activities supported by parent education and materials for use at home. Ken met Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz--then a Ph.D. student at Temple University--and was impressed by her innovative research on tonal and rhythmic development in young children. Based on their research on how children learn, how a child's brain processes and organizes music, and how to support developmentally appropriate learning, they began to develop the Music Together program and philosophy. Now serving 3,000 communities in 40 countries, Music Together connects families across the globe, and strives to make the world a better place by making it more musical.

The Music Together program was first offered in Portland in 1998 when Bonnie Singer and Mary Beth Camp discovered a mutual passion for helping families discover the joy of making music as a family and with other members of their community.

Starting with 23 families at one location, Music Together of Portland has grown to 1300 families singing and dancing together each session in seven locations throughout the Portland metro area. That makes us one of the largest Music Together centers in the world!

We are thrilled to be celebrating 20 years of building stronger families and communities through music making, and we can't wait to make music with you and your family!
